Wall Street Webcasting has prepared and provided for you an exclusive broadcast of Wells Fargo Securities own, Rich Gordon. Gordon is highly recognized for his weekly narrates regarding the fixed income strategy at Wells Fargo Securities (NYSE: WFC). This week, Gordon discusses the new and controversial means of virtual payments: bitcoins.

The use of bitcoins has become more widespread recently and companies are faced with the decision to accept bitcoins as a payment method for their products. Since bitcoins do not hold a tangible financial element, they lack an innate allure to some. The question has been posed: "how much are bitcoins really worth?" After all, bitcoins are not issued, nor are they protected by the government. This does not necessarily mean that they have no desirability. As simple supply and demand has exhibited, their worth is determined by how much someone is willing to pay for them.

Over the last 12 months, it has not been the value of the dollar that has vacillated greatly, but the value of bitcoins. The fluctuation seen in the value of the dollar is only a fraction of that seen in the value of bitcoins.

Some developing countries may see bitcoins as a threat to the value of their primary currency. Many countries, within the last month, have restricted banks from accepting bitcoins, or have labeled them as being an asset, rather than a currency. This means that the use of bitcoins would now be subject to capital gains taxes, and may cause some hesitation. Some believe bitcoins to be a product of the "social media" era, and they will be a passing fad. However, this may not be the case, as the charts show an upward price trend.
