Telekom Malaysia Bhd.'s second-quarter net profit rose sharply thanks to higher demand.

The Malaysian telco said Wednesday that second-quarter net profit rose 73% from a year earlier to 378.1 million ringgit ($84.2 million).

Revenue rose to MYR3.09 billion, compared with MYR2.76 billion a year ago, the telco said.

Telekom Malaysia said the profit increase was mostly due to higher demand for connectivity, services and digital solutions. The company declared an interim dividend of 9.0 sen a share.

"We look forward to rolling out 5G-enabled products and solutions and unlocking value to meet customers' demands," said Imri Mokhtar, Telekom Malaysia's group chief executive, in a statement.

The telco recently agreed to take up a stake in state-controlled 5G wholesaler Digital Nasional Bhd., which would give it access to 5G networks.
