Tata Power, India's largest integrated Power Company, has always been committed to improve the quality of lives of the communities living around its project and plant locations. In line with this commitment, Tata Power's Tiruldih project has worked with the nearby villages of Kuda, Tiruldih, Chaura & Gundalidih of Kukru Block in Jharkhand to provide continuous and clean water supply to the children of Tiruldih Middle School. Given that the area where the Tiruldih Middle School is situated is devoid of electricity, Tata Power came up with the unique idea of installing solar water pumps to ensure continuous supply of running water in the school toilets.

The objective of this initiative was to create an environment which encourages and facilitates learning and attendance in schools by providing a clean and congenial environment for students to study. Basis a survey conducted, it was identified that lack of basic infrastructure like running water facility in toilets has a big effect on school attendance. The solar powered water system was preferred over a diesel pump as it generates no pollution and recurring expenses are low. The initiative will benefit approximately 400 students of Tiruldih Middle School.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Asim Thakurta, Chief - Corporate Projects, Tata Power, said that, 'Solar power is a sustainable and renewable source of energy which causes zero emission. The fact that increasingly solar energy is being used in India to power our everyday lives is indeed encouraging. As a corporate, we look forward to supporting such ingenuous project and continue with the upliftment of the communities.'

The project was executed with consultation and active support of the local community including school teachers, the village education committee & the village development community as well as local government authorities. The Solar Water Pump was handed over to the school authorities by Tata Power in presence of School students, Teachers & PRI Members.
