Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. on Monday said its longtime chairman, P. Roy Vagelos, plans to retire in June.

The Tarrytown, N.Y., biotechnology company said Mr. Vagelos, who has been chairman since January 1995, will complete his current term but won't stand for re-election at the annual shareholder meeting on June 9.

Regeneron said its founders, Leonard Schleifer and George Yancopoulos, will become co-chairmen in addition to their current posts.

Mr. Schleifer, who is currently chief executive and co-president, served as chairman before Mr. Vagelos joined the company after retiring from drugmaker Merck & Co. Mr. Yancopoulos is currently co-president and chief scientific officer.

Regeneron also said Christine Poon, a board member since 2010, would become lead independent director.
