Reducing Unmanaged Plastic Waste, Garut Regency Government Collaborates With Chandra Asri

and Bakti Barito Foundation in Plastic Asphalt Road Program

Tuesday, 8 March 2022 - Garut Regency Government signed a Cooperation Agreement with Chandra Asri and Bakti Barito Foundation (Bakti Barito), to support the application of plastic asphalt road in Garut. Plastic Asphalt is one of the Indonesian government's programs to solve the problem of unmanaged plastic waste in Indonesia.

Garut Regency will build 50 km plastic asphalt road in various location implemented in several stages. The first phase of 23 km-long plastic asphalt road will use approximately 28,8 million pieces of used plastic shopping bag waste. Plastic shopping bag waste is washed and shredded into small pieces and added into the asphalt hotmix, which will increase the road's resistance and quality up to 40% and minimize damage. The plastic waste will be provided by Chandra Asri in collaboration with Asosiasi Daur Ulang Plastik Indonesia (ADUPI).

The Regent of Garut, Rudy Gunawan, said in his opening remarks, "We welcome this collaboration program to handle the problem of plastic waste in Garut Regency and its surroundings. The application of new innovations such as plastic asphalt road is a solution to overcome environmental problems in Garut. I hope this cooperation to reduce unmanaged plastic waste can be consistently done as protecting the environment is our shared responsibility."

The Head of Garut Regency Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency, Ms. Luna Aviantrini, said,

"Implementing innovation to solve environmental problems is positive breakthrough. This collaboration to implement the plastic asphalt program, which has never been done before in Garut, is an excellent concrete example to solving environmental problems while also building quality infrastructure. The PUPR Agency welcomes this collaboration between related parties to produce quality and durable plastic asphalt roads."

Edi Rivai, Director of Legal, External Affairs & Circular Economy Chandra Asri said, "In line with our principle as a Growth Partner, the collaboration with Garut Regency Government is testament of our efforts to continue implementing and find sustainable solutions to waste problems, especially plastic waste in Indonesia. We believe that the problem of plastic waste can be handled with participation of various stakeholders. We hope in the future more parties will participate in this initiative to jointly support the Indonesian Government in achieving its waste management goals."

Dian Purbasari, Director of Bakti Barito said, "Preserving the environment is one of the main focuses of Bakti Barito, and this plastic asphalt program is a concrete example of how we can take innovative solutions to manage the problem of plastic waste. Bakti Barito applauded the enthusiasm of Garut Regency Government in its efforts to manage plastic waste. Together with Garut Regency we also implement education program in elementary schools, to increase teachers capacity and promote behavioral changes in students on responsible consumption and protecting the environment through proper and circular plastic management, through for example, adding plastic waste into asphalt road mixture."

This collaboration in Garut will be implemented throughout 2022-2023. It will manage up to 216,6 tonnes of unmanaged plastic waste from Garut final waste disposal site. The plastic asphalt road program has previously been implemented in Jabodetabek, Cilegon, Tegal and Kudus through collaboration between the government and the private sector.
