Work starts on 19 August on a National Grid project to keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in Wentworth.

National Grid is renewing 300 metres of gas pipes in Hague Lane. The work is due to take four weeks and will involve replacing existing iron gas mains with new, hard wearing plastic pipes, designed to last for at least 80 years.

To carry out the work safely, Hague Lane will be closed to through traffic from the junction with Scholes Lane and Wentworth Road to the junction with B6090 Main Road in Wentworth. Access for visitors to Wentworth Garden Centre will be maintained from Main Road.

A short stretch of Wentworth Road in Thorpe Hesley will also be closed, from the junction of Hague Lane and Scholes Lane to the junction with Curlew Rise. Access to Thorpe Hesley will be via the B6086 Barnsley Road or via Brook Hill.

Joshua Eades, National Grid project manager, said: "This project will ensure that local people continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for decades to come. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. We are working with local businesses, residents and the local authority to reduce disruption. Access will be maintained for visitors to Wentworth Garden Centre, which will remain open as usual. If people have any queries about our work and how it will affect them, they can contact us on 0800 0965678."

The following signed diversion around the closure will be in place: B6090 Main Street, B6090 Barrow Hill, B6090 Dike Hill, B6090 Harley Road, A6135, Kirby Lane, B6086 Barnsley Road. The diversion then splits in Thorpe Hesley, with access to Wentworth Road via Chapelfield Road. For all other routes continue on B6086 Thorpe Street, B6086 Brook Hill and then the A629 Upper Wortley Road.

The work is being carried out on behalf of National Grid by a partnership between Skanska and Morrison Utility Services.

The project is part of an £800 million investment National Grid is making to renew gas mains in the East of England region running up until 2021. Over the next 12 months the company will be upgrading some 350kms of pipe in the region.
