  • Work to take place in Fenchurch Street and Leadenhall Street over the summer
    • Lane closures will be implemented to enable work to take place
    • Minimal dig technology being used to reduce disruption

National Grid is continuing its programme of essential gas mains replacement work in the City.

Engineers are replacing ageing metallic gas mains with tough new durable pipes which will ensure the local community keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies.

The latest phase of the work will begin in Fenchurch Street on Monday 1 June for approximately six weeks. Once this phase is completed work will shift to Leadenhall Street for a further six weeks. All work is expected to be complete by the end of August.

While work is taking place in Fenchurch Street there will be a westbound lane closure. This will be replaced by an eastbound lane closure when work shifts to Leadenhall Street, when the bus stop outside 80 Leadenhall Street will also be temporarily relocated.

Work has been coordinated with the City of London and Transport for London and the project has been brought forward to coincide with the Aldgate regeneration scheme to minimise disruption.

National Grid project engineer, Mick Morris, said: "Wherever possible we're using innovative technology to insert the new pipe into the old gas mains. This is much quicker and less disruptive than digging trenches to lay new mains.

"Throughout the work, all shops and business will be open as usual and our engineers will make every effort to deliver this essential work with minimal disruption."

The local community and surrounding businesses will be kept informed about the progress of the project.

The project is part of National Grid's essential gas mains replacement programme in the capital. For more advice or information on the project call 0800 096 5678 or go to www.roadworks.org
