Facebook Inc. has barred President Trump from posting on his Facebook and Instagram accounts for at least the remaining days of his presidential term, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said.

The social-media giant had previously removed Mr. Trump's posts and locked his account after pro-Trump rioters invaded the Capitol building and threatened lawmakers amid the certification process of President-elect Joe Biden's Electoral College victory. Mr. Zuckerberg on Thursday said the company sees Mr. Trump as using his remaining time in office to undermine the transition of power to Mr. Biden.

"His decision to use his platform to condone rather than condemn the actions of his supporters at the Capitol building has rightly disturbed people in the US and around the world," Mr. Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post. "We removed these statements yesterday because we judged that their effect -- and likely their intent -- would be to provoke further violence."

Twitter Inc. said Mr. Trump will regain the ability to use his personal account Thursday after it temporarily locked his account. The company had removed three of his tweets from public viewing, saying they represented "repeated and severe violations" of its policies.
