'We like the German tournament,' explained Head of Academy Nicky Butt to us. 'It breaks things up and is a nice way of getting back into the swing of things after the Christmas and New Year break. It's about different techniques, learning receiving skills, spatial awareness, counter attacking, the keeper using his feet at the back and all these different dynamics.

'It's a nice atmosphere and an indoor setting. The players will bond as they're back together after being away and it can get a bit draining training in bad weather with the same scenario so these competitions are really good for us.'

Colin Little is set to coach the boys with two games on Friday night - against JFV Eichsfeld-Mitte and AZ Alkmaar - before matches against Eintracht Northeim, Gottingen 05, Borussia Monchengladbach and JSG Uslar/Solling on Saturday. Sunday's fixtures will depend upon our group standing.
