KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. is set to sign a deal with SMR technology developer NuScale Power to develop 1-12 SMR reactors with capacity of 77 MW each, and expects the first such reactor to be launched in 2029, the company said in a market filing. Specifically, the deal "involves the development of nuclear technology in the form of repowering current coal-fired turbines or the development of new nuclear energy sources in the form of SMRs," the filing explained. While completion of the project is expected by end-2030, KGHM assumes the first SMR will start to operate in 2029, according to the filing. The agreement will be signed still on September 23 and be in force to September 23, 2024, the company noted. Consultancy PBE Molecule will also be part of the agreement. In early September, KGHM CEO Marcin Chludzinski said KGHM wanted to install an SMR reactor "as soon as possible" in the frame of the company's strategy update assuming a turn towards greener energy sources.
