Eliminating entry barriers and increasing scalability of building management systems with AI speakers, digital signage, etc., as well as robots

The number of participants in the Open API (Application Programming Interface), which Hyundai Elevator unveiled to the public in March last year, is rapidly increasing to more than 60 companies, research institutes, and individuals in just about a year, drawing attention for its huge possibility.

By removing entry barriers for anyone to use, the pool of participants has been diversified into major telecommunications companies such as LG Electronics and Kakao, KT and LGU+ and platform companies such as Woowa Brothers, government-funded research institutes like Robotis and Twinny and other individual researchers.

API, a software interface for connecting computers or computer programs, can extend inter-connections between different types of systems or software. Business potential is expected to be huge because it can be linked to various IoT devices and external systems such as robots, artificial intelligence (AI) speakers, smartphones, digital signage, and building management systems (BMS).

Currently, robot linkage is the area which witnesses the most active research and development progress. It has been commercialized and operated at more than 30 sites where Hyundai Elevators are installed, including hospitals, hotels, residential and commercial complexes, and office buildings. One of the main cases which applies the Open API is Yongin Severance Hospital (Jung-dong, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do), where a total of 28 Hyundai elevators are installed. Here at the Yongin Severance Hospital, a total of 10 medical service robots operated by LG Electronics, SKT, and Twinny move freely inside the buildings to transport blood, samples, and medical supplies. Kids robots are also in operation to guide child patients to the ward.

Hyundai Elevator is expected to revitalize the elevator industry based on the open API, which provides various services such as calling the elevator with a smartphone without having to press the button or offering customized information to the elevator digital signage by grasping the information of users. It is also expected to improve the operating system by analyzing elevator usage pattern to reduce power usage or waiting time by automatically positioning elevators on crowded floors.

An official from Hyundai Elevator said, "Since the open API operates on a cloud-based basis, you can freely connect to external devices such as robots and smartphones without installing separate equipment as long as you can use the Internet."
