9 HK Electric pillar boxes have recently been dressed up to illustrate the public's vision and commitment to reducing carbon footprint. Unveiled today (24 February 2022) in different parts of Hong Kong Island, these pillar boxes stand as the Company's spokespersons for decarbonisation and focal points of an online game "Decarbonisation Get Set, Go", also launched today to invite the public to go low carbon in their daily lives.

Designs of these pillar boxes came from the winning entries of the "New Mission for Decarbonisation" Pillar Box Design Competition held last year drawing more than 480 submissions. Nine outstanding pieces were selected and applied onto HK Electric's pillar boxes (see appendix for full list of winners).

At today's online launch, the Managing Director of HK Electric, Mr. Wan Chi-tin, was joined by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr. Wong Kam-sing, to present awards and exchange views with the champions of the three categories in the competition.

Mr. Wong was pleased to note the popularity of the competition calling for the public, especially the younger generations, to learn more and support decarbonisation. "These works have not only beautified the community, but also bring the message of decarbonisation to our lives with creativity and remind us of striving for the new era of 'Carbon Neutrality'."

He further encouraged the winners and all to adopt low carbon lifestyle as a duty to combat global climate change, and to turn risks into opportunities through green finance and related employment. He hoped young people would look into their own interests and talent and contribute to achieving carbon neutrality.

Mr. Wan also expressed his appreciation of all who have taken part in the competition. "I am thankful to all participants for sharing with us their aspirations for carbon neutrality in 2050 and the many ways they remind HK citizens to help achieve this goal. With their artistic brushstrokes, these nine pillar boxes have become not only public artworks but also our spokespersons for decarbonisation."

"At HK Electric, we are committed to decarbonising our power generation and operations to support the Government's vision of achieving carbon neutrality," Mr. Wan continued.

"We are also keen to assist customers and the community in doing so. Taking the opportunity of unveiling these decarbonisation pillar boxes, we are rolling out the "Decarbonisation Get Set, Go" online game. We hope the public can learn more about decarbonisation and how they can contribute to it for our city."

From now till 10 May, everyone is welcome to join the three-tier "Decarbonisation Get Set, Go" online game to win attractive prizes. By voting for your favourite pillar box, taking photos and sharing creative decarbonisation tips by videos, the public will have a chance to win prizes up to about $100,000. For details, simply visit the "Decarbonisation Get Set, Go" webpage.

Following today's launch, the Happy Green Campaign 2022 also kicked off its activities. Continuing on the theme of "New Mission for Decarbonisation", related information and tips will be shared via "Green TV". A decarbonisation activity book will also be produced for kindergarten kids to encourage them to learn about low carbon in a fun way.

In addition, the popular OLE activity "Interactive Drama - Smart Power Alliance" was performed for more than 60 times on-site and online since its launch in 2020, allowing about 12,000 primary and secondary school students to learn the importance of environmental protection for the future. This year, a new drama will be developed to encourage the public to contribute towards carbon neutrality by 2050.

Happy Green Campaign is the anchor event under HK Electric's Education Fund. Through organising different activities, the programme aims to promote energy efficiency and conservation, renewable energy and low carbon lifestyle to the general public and the younger generation.

In 2021, despite the impact of the pandemic, the campaign reached about 80,000 through online and offline activities and via videos, social media and online platforms. The Happy Green School Network was extended to 507 schools and the Happy Green Ambassadors nominated by the schools received training for promoting green in campus and the community.
