Heiwa Real Estate Co., Ltd. (hereafter, the "Company") announced today that world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma of Kengo Kuma & Associates has agreed to oversee the design of a building it is developing in Sapporo following the Company's invitation to have him assess the design.
Located in Sapporo's Odori Nishi Yonchome Minami district, the building is central to a plan devised together with property rights holders to optimally redevelop the area. Heiwa Real Estate has been taking steps to acquire approval for the plan from the city government since July of this year. The Company is redeveloping areas of Sapporo as part of its efforts to increase the quality and scale of its Redevelopment Business under its medium-term management plan, Challenge & Progress.
As a company that contributes to the revitalizing districts, Heiwa Real Estate will work together with the property rights holders and Kengo Kuma to finalize an appealing design that best suits the area given its prime location in central Sapporo.

Profile of the building design supervisor, Kengo Kuma
Born in 1954, Kengo Kuma graduated from the Department of Agriculture in the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Engineering. He returned to the same department as a professor from 2009 to 2020 and was appointed as a special honorary professor in April 2020. He dreamed of becoming an architect since childhood after being impressed by the Yoyogi National Gymnasium, designed by Kenzo Tange, during the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. As a university student, he studied under architects Hiroshi Hara and Yoshichika Uchida. During his postgraduate studies, he travelled across the Sahara Desert in Africa to conduct community surveys and came to appreciate the beauty and potential of the local villages. He then continued his studies at Columbia University as a visiting researcher, and established Kengo Kuma & Associates in 1990. Dr. Kuma has designed buildings in over 20 countries and received a wide array of domestic and international awards, including an Architectural Institute of Japan Award, Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award (Finland), and International Stone Architecture Award (Italy). While aiming for structures that blend in with the local environment and culture, Dr. Kuma proposes human scale designs that are people-friendly and welcoming. By substituting concrete and steel with new materials, he strives to create ideal structures for a post-industrial society.
