BERLIN, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Hapag-Lloyd welcomes measures to secure safe passage for cargo vessels in the Red Sea as diversions from the region have led to tens of millions of euros in additional monthly costs for the company, a spokesperson said on Friday.

The United States and Britain carried out strikes against Houthi military targets in Yemen overnight. The movement's attacks on ships in the Red Sea have prompted Hapag-Lloyd and other shipping companies to avoid the area.

"We are not commenting on the specific incidents that occurred last night," the spokesperson told Reuters. "But we welcome measures that make the passage through the Red Sea safe again."

The Funke Media Group first reported the comments.

The spokesperson spoke of "additional costs per month in the high double-digit millions" as a result of diverting ships away from the Red Sea.

Deliveries to the United States were taking a week longer, with delays of up to two weeks for Europe. (Reporting by Elke Ahlswede Writing by Rachel More Editing by Miranda Murray)
