Evergreen Marine Taiwan : Customer Advisory - EU ETS

Dear esteem customer,

Since 2005 the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) has been introduced by European Union as a market-based mechanism to tackle greenhouse gas emissions within European communities, and according to latest decision, from 2024, the ETS will include shipping activities within the European Economic Area (EEA) consisting of EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. Ship operators will be required to surrender allowances for every ton of CO2 emitted.

Under the new law, shipping companies are obligated to purchase allowances for the following emissions:

1. 50% of emissions from voyages departing from an EU port to a non-EU port and vice versa.
2. 100% of emissions from voyages between EU ports.
3. 100% of emissions from ships docked at an EU port.

Shipping companies are required to submit allowances equivalent to a portion of their emissions as below schedule:

1. In 2024, submit allowances for 40% of their verified emissions.
2. In 2025, submit allowances for 70% of their verified emissions.
3. From 2026, submit allowances for all their verified emissions.

In compliance with the new law and the carbon pricing introduced by EU ETS, Evergreen line will collect the equivalent surcharge from Jan 01 2024 for cargo origin or arriving Europe regime, and the estimated quantum as state below subject to periodic review, you are welcome to approach our office where close to your location if you need any further information in this regard.

Re:1. Special equipment (Except Reefer ) is same as DRY.

2. Effective date: Jan 01, 2024 (On board date, except US, CA trade : in gate date)

3. Validity: Annual Review, but subject to change by prior notice or instruction by Carrier.

4. Charge will be collected additionally with the payment of Ocean Freight.
