As of last Monday, February 27, ENGIE Brasil Energia concluded the implementation of the Novo Estado Project, a transmission system located in the states of Tocantins and Pará. The asset became 100% operational with the energization of the section of power line between the Xingu and Serra Pelada substations. Commercial operations began in 2021 and completion occurred within the time-frame established by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency).

The Novo Estado project was designed to reinforce the offtake of energy generated by the hydropower plants in the North of the country, thereby optimizing the National Interconnected System. At an investment of R$ 3.2 billion, a total of 3,634 towers were installed along 1,800 kilometers of 500kV power line, traversing 24 municipalities.

In addition to the implementation of the transmission lines, the project included the construction of a new substation and the expansion of a further three. This final section crosses six cities in the south of the state of Pará (Anapu, Pacajá, Novo Repartimento, Itupiranga, Marabá and Curionópolis).

The project's conclusion and the integral operation of the transmission lines represent the consolidation of ENGIE Brasil Energia's strategy of investments in infrastructure projects in Brazil. The Company now operates two major power lines in the country: Novo Estado, between the states of Pará and Tocantins, and Gralha Azul, in the state of Paraná, totaling more than 2,800 kilometers of line and 14 substations either newly built or expanded.

"The operation of Novo Estado in full is an important milestone, since it demonstrates our capacity of execution and our strategy of transmitting sustainable and clean energy to the leading consumer markets. Now, we operate two lines which in addition to transmitting energy, are a further stimulus to development of important regions in Brazil", points out Eduardo Sattamini, Chief Executive and Investor Relations Officer at ENGIE Brasil Energia.

Since the outset of work on Novo Estado, the Company has carried out a series of actions in conjunction with the communities adjacent to the project. These include incentives for local entrepreneurship, the creation of jobs and income and support in the areas of education, occupational health and safety, among other initiatives. Some 20 projects were developed with the backing of private social investment and realized during the entire period under construction of Novo Estado and decided after permanent dialog with the communities.

Energization at Gralha Azul

After reaching 94% of operationalization in the second quarter of 2022, also in February, the Gralha Azul Transmission System in Paraná was fully energized with the ramp-up of the stretch comprising the rural and urban zones of the cities of Ponta Grossa, Imbituva and Irati.

The first power lines at Gralha Azul were energized in 2021, anticipating by 16 months the timeframe enshrined in the concessions agreement. "Anticipation of the project's commercial operation was instrumental in the solution to energy supplies from the Itaipu Hydropower Plant in Paraná", explained ENGIE Brasil Energia's Chief Executive Officer, Eduardo Sattamini.

At an investment worth R$ 1.8 billion in investments, the Gralha Azul Transmission System covers 1,000 kilometers, crossing 27 municipalities in the state of Paraná, its implementation accompanied by a series of socio-environmental projects in parallel focused on the mitigation of the impacts caused by construction/assembly work as well as support for the sustainable development of the local communities.

Other transmission projects

In June 2022, ENGIE Brasil Energia bid successfully for Lot 7 in the Aneel Transmission Auction 01/2022. Today, known as Gavião Real Transmissora de Energia, it incorporates the expansion of the Itacaiúnas substation which will meet the requirements of the energy distribution network in the state of Pará. The project will complement the Novo Estado Transmission System with the consequent capture of synergies. The cutoff date by which time the transmission line must be operational is March 30, 2026.
