Teacher's lounge at Alfonso B. Perez Career and Transition Center gets a Facelift

"When Teachers Win we all Win"

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Theteacher's lounge at the Alfonso B. Perez Career and Transition Center, a school serving special needs students in East Los Angeles, is going to look a little different come Monday (Nov. 18), courtesy of a design plan that includes updated décor, new appliances, gently-used furnishings, a fresh coat of paint and 20 hardworking volunteers from DIRECTV.

When DIRECTV recently renovated its company headquarters in El Segundo, it found itself with rooms full of surplus office furniture in good condition. They approached Scripps Networks Interactive, parent of HGTV and DIY Network, to help find an environmentally friendly way to extend the life of these furnishings. Working with Scripps' national partner Rebuilding Together, they identified a local school in need of a little updating.

"You can never invest too much in our teachers. Improving their quality of life means improving our children's quality of life," said Brent Scott, vice president, national accounts, at Scripps Networks Interactive. "This partnership with DIRECTV and Rebuilding Together allows us to give back to our educators and enrich our communities."

HGTV talent and designer Todd Davis developed a plan to renovate the center's teacher's lounge using the donated furniture. He also added lamps, wall hangings, and other items to make the lounge a comfortable, collaborative space for educators to enjoy during their breaks at school.

"This project demonstrates what can be accomplished when businesses and nonprofits work together to give back to the community," said Joe Bosch, executive vice president and chief human resources officer, DIRECTV. "We are fortunate to have strong partners who share our commitment to K-12 education and environmental sustainability."

"I want to thank everyone involved for their efforts," said Michael Joaquin Terry, the school's principal. "It's a great opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication of our staff. This will provide a wonderful place to reenergize all of us as we continue to support our students with most need."

As part of the teacher's lounge renovation, DIRECTV also will set up a DIRECTV System and complimentary programming through its DIRECTV GOES TO SCHOOL program. Currently 5,000 schools across the U.S. enjoy complimentary SCHOOL CHOICE programming from DIRECTV.

EDITORS, PLEASE NOTE: Volunteers will complete the renovation on Nov. 18between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., with a reveal of the renovated teacher's lounge to the school's educators at 2:15.
