Digital signage end users have often experimented with holograms as a way to draw in distracted visitors. However, simply using a hologram by itself often isn't enough to lure in customers — unless the hologram features someone the audience would definitely recognize such as an actor.

This is precisely the tactic DBS Bank, a multinational bank based in Singapore, used in its latest advertising campaign in Hong Kong. The bank partnered with outdoor advertiser JCDecaux to deploy a holographic bus shelter at Causeway Bay, a luxury shopping district, according to a video.

The campaign used holographic virtual characters portrayed by actress Jessica Hsuan and digital frame animations with actor Louis Koo to promote its new iWealth app. The holographic actors would wave at pedestrians and share information on the app.

"As a first in Hong Kong with outdoor hologram installation, the Creative Shelter boasted an animation installation with three holographic LED fan displays, achieving a lifelike hovering hologram fitting with the campaign’s futuristic and smart creative direction," the video description stated.

The app itself is a virtual wealth account that allows users to manage their wealth on their mobile devices. The bank claims it is Hong Kong's first fully virtual wealth account, according to the video.

This is not the first time JCDecaux has deployed holographic displays. It has used them to promote Russian reality TV shows and shark attack movies. It also helped promote Hong Kong's art scene with an augmented reality campaign in Hong Kong's metro.
