Daewoo Engineering & Construction announced on the 26th that it became the first domestic construction company to receive certification for the nuclear power supply chain quality management system (ISO 19443).

The certificate awarding ceremony held at the Euljiro headquarters on the 25th was attended by officials from both companies, including Daewoo E&C CEO Baek Jeong-wan, Safety and Quality Division Director Kim Young-il, Safety and Quality Executive Bae Yong-joo, and TUV SUD Korea CEO Seo Jeong-wook.

ISO 19443 is a nuclear quality management system designed to improve safety and quality throughout the nuclear power supply chain organization and is issued by TUV SUD, a global certification body in Europe. ISO 19443 is applicable to all companies that supply products and services (ITNS 1) important to nuclear safety.

Currently, major nuclear power plant operating countries in Europe require acquisition of ISO 19443 as a prerequisite for supplying nuclear power plant equipment and services. Daewoo E&C preemptively acquired ISO 19443 in preparation for the expansion of domestic and international bidding qualification requirements, starting with the Czech nuclear power plant project that is currently being bid on.

ISO 19443 places particular emphasis on nuclear safety culture, emphasizing leadership in creating a nuclear safety culture, sufficient consideration of nuclear safety when making decisions, transparent communication, and continuous improvement through learning.

Daewoo Engineering & Construction has carried out about 30 nuclear power-related projects to date, starting with the main facility construction of Wolseong Units 3 and 4, Korea's only heavy water reactor nuclear power plant, in July 1991. In addition, in 2017, we completed the Jordan research reactor, Korea's first overseas export project, and successfully completed a nuclear EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) project for the first time as a domestic private company. Based on this, we are currently carrying out construction work on a new research reactor for export in Gijang-gun, Busan. It serves as the lead organizer.

A Daewoo E&C official said, 'Daewoo E&C will establish a nuclear safety culture by obtaining ISO 19443 certification and will continue to improve related processes.' He added, 'Based on Daewoo E&C's outstanding safety and quality management capabilities in the nuclear power business, we will build a new Czech Republic company.' 'We will definitely win orders for nuclear power plants,' he said.
