CLH STARTS DISMANTLING ITS STORAGE FACILITY IN HOSPITAL DEL REY (BURGOS)

Work on environmental recovery will begin when the tanks and equipment have been dismantled

Today CLH starts dismantling the tanks at the former storage plant located in the Hospital del Rey area (Burgos), after completing the preliminary process for emptying and cleaning the tanks and pipes.
The Hospital del Rey storage facility started operating in 1965 and ceased to be operational in 2011, when the new storage facility which is located in the Cortes area (Burgos) was brought into service.
The Hospital del Rey facility occupies a piece of land measuring around 40,000 square metres, and its dismantlement will comply with the terms of the protocol established in December 2005 with Burgos City Council and will foster development of the area where it is situated.
The decommissioning process includes taking down all the tanks and equipment in the facility, and will last until the end of May 2012.
When the dismantling work is completed environmental recovery work is expected to begin. This will be done by carrying out research studies and environmental characterization of the subsoil in order to decide on the most suitable techniques for cleaning up the area before putting the required environmental recovery project before the Regional Government of Castile and León for approval.
This recovery work will benefit from CLH's wide experience that has been gained in the clean-up processes undertaken at other facilities that have already been dismantled in Valencia, Somorrostro and Santurce.
To replace CLH facility located in the Hospital del Rey area, the company built a new one on the road leading to the solid waste dump (Ecoparque) in an area known as El Cucarazal, which involved an investment of 29 million euros and has been designed with the aim of guaranteeing the supply of oil products to end customers with the maximum level of efficiency, combining a high level of automation in its operating processes with maximum guarantees of safety and respect for the environment.

Burgos, 18 January 2012 Information of interest regarding the dismantling operation

The environmental and building permit was granted by Burgos City Council on 8
September 2011, after presentation of a technical project and an environmental report that were reported on favourably by the Regional Government of Castile and León's Territorial Environmental Service.
Before dismantling work began, the tanks and pipes were given a thorough cleaning and were degasified.
Dismantling of the tanks was carried out by means of thrust and traction using long- armed machinery fitted with shears, and fitted with oxy-cutting equipment for scrapping of all the metal elements, walkways, etc.
- Total size of the plot: 39,835 m2
- Size of the tanks: There are 18 tanks. They range from 10 m diameter by 18 m. high, which are the smallest, up to 16 m diameter by 18 m high, which are the largest.
- Material: Carbon steel
- Total weight: 1,300 tons
- Weight of the largest tanks: 85 tons each
- Total metres of piping at the plant: 12,000 metres (12 kilometres)
- Total weight of piping: 330 tons
- Term for completion: five months from the start of the work
It is possible that the steel from the storage tanks and pipes may be reused in steelworks and the scrap metal will be recycled as raw material for making metals.
All the waste will be classified and collected up before being sent by an authorized dump or recycling plant by an authorized manager, as required by the laws in force.
