PINEVILLE, La., January 17, 2013 - Temperatures are dropping and heating use is increasing. To help avoid a surprise in your next electric bill, Cleco offers ways to manage the amount of electricity you use.

"To stay warm during this colder time of year, we use our heating systems more, which can result in higher energy bills," said Shirley Turner, general manager of customer experience management. "You can still be comfortable and keep your bills in check if you follow a few conservation tips like caulking and using weather stripping around windows and doors to eliminate air leaks."

The easiest way to help control the amount of electricity consumed is to focus on the largest energy users in your home. Heating and air conditioning account for about half of a home's energy use. The most energy efficient setting for the winter is a thermostat setting of 68 degrees. "This is a recommended setting and the further you can lower your thermostat and remain comfortable, the more savings you will see," said Turner. "Water heaters also use a lot of energy. Set the thermostat of a water heater at 120 degrees for maximum efficiency."

Changing or cleaning filters in air returns and checking around pipes coming into a home and sealing any air leaks can stop cold air from seeping inside. Also insulate hot water pipes and ducts where they run through unheated areas.

"The best part about conserving energy is that it doesn't have to cost much at all," said Turner.
