Taking a CBD-infused bath is one of the most popular ways to experience the benefits of CBD. Here at cbdMD, we've developed a range of CBD bath products that have attracted a fan base among everyday consumers and even professional athletes. But our latest product launch is a twist on a much older bathing tradition: CBD Bath Salts.

We've previously delved into how CBD is absorbed through the skin, making a relaxing bath with CBD even more soothing and beneficial. So let's take a look at bath salts and how they can work with CBD.

The Origins of Bath Salts

Bathing in warm, salty water for pleasure and health goes back to way before indoor plumbing. For centuries, certain hot springs and other bodies of water that are naturally rich in minerals developed reputations that have drawn pilgrims from far and wide. In fact, the word 'spa' comes from the town of Spa in Belgium, whose mineral springs made it so popular among the European gentry that it became a generic word for a personal-care spot.

Another such place is the town of Epsom, in southern England. Its hot springs also became a magnet for visitors 'taking the waters.' Eventually, scientists learned that the major mineral in it was magnesium sulfate, which is still commonly called Epsom salt. Magnesium sulfate isn't your standard table salt, which is sodium chloride, but its crystalline structure puts it in the 'salt' category for chemical purposes.

Another natural 'spa' used since ancient times is the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea, located on the border between Israel and Jordan, is actually an endorheic lake, meaning a lake that rivers flow into, but nothing flows out. As a result, water can escape only by evaporation. But since only pure water can evaporate, it leaves behind all the minerals and silt that the inflowing rivers picked up along the way.

Because of this, endorheic lakes are sometimes called 'salt lakes.' In fact, the Great Salt Lake in Utah is another example of one. But they're very different from the saltwater you find in the ocean. The sodium content is extremely high and heavily mixed with other minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, and even aluminum.

All this makes endorheic lakes hostile to aquatic life. The Great Salt Lake supports a few kinds of brine shrimp, but the Dead Sea is so salty that it's, well, dead. But it can actually be quite beneficial to human beings. Every year, tourists visit to bathe in its waters and soak up the sun.

Bath Salts Effects

So what are the benefits the droves of tourists get from visiting these natural salt baths? Lots of claims have been made, and the FDA has not formally approved bath salts as medicinal treatments for any condition. But your skin needs nutrition just like the rest of you, so essential minerals can help keep it healthy.

The most common reasons people seek out bath salts are dry-skin irritation and joint discomfort. Hot water by itself can help these conditions by hydrating skin, improving blood flow, and relaxing muscles. Hot water with these minerals can bring added benefits by helping sluff off dead skin cells, boost blood circulation, and keep the immune system balanced.

CBD can also help relax blood vessels and keep the body's immune system balanced by maintaining homeostasis. So CBD and bath salts together sure seem like a winning formula to us.

Types of CBD Bath Salts

All our CBD Bath Salts include both Epsom salt and Dead Sea salt, along with Himalayan pink salt, a type of sodium chloride enriched with traces of other minerals that give it its delicate rosy color. Each also contains 100 mg of Superior Broad Spectrum CBD per half-cup, which is the amount we recommend using per bath, as well as arnica, an herbal extract used for joint and muscle discomfort.

From this base, we've developed three blends.

  • Lavender: Lavender essential oil is a popular cleansing ingredient, and many people also find it soothing to inhale. So a bath with lavender CBD bath salts is a great way to get clean and mellow.
  • Eucalyptus: Eucalyptus oil is a common ingredient in cough and cold remedies to help soothe the mucus membranes, and it lends a piquant earthy scent to the bath.
  • Nighttime Lavender: Lavender oil adds a soothing scent to an herbal blend similar to our CBD PM sleep aid: melatonin, chamomile, hops, passionflower, and valerian root. Try bathing in it an hour or so before bedtime for a good night's sleep.
How to Use CBD Bath Salts

Bath salts are very simple to use. Simply sprinkle a half cup of the salts into the water as you're filling up the tub. Let them dissolve thoroughly, climb in, and enjoy! We recommend soaking for at least 30 minutes to get the full benefits.

If you really want to make your bath as relaxing and luxurious as possible, building a whole routine around it can make it the perfect way to wind down in the evenings. Check out our post, CBD Bath Bombs: How to Relax After a Long Day, for tips and substitute the Nighttime Lavender blend for any bath bomb, and you'll be ready to slip off into dreamland.
