Brinker International, Inc. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended December 26, 2012. For the quarter, the company reported total revenues of $689,764,000 compared to $681,904,000 a year ago. Operating income was $61,566,000 compared to $55,920,000 a year ago. Income before provision for income taxes was $55,226,000 compared to $50,265,000 a year ago. Net income was $37,177,000 or $0.50 diluted per share compared to $35,674,000 or $0.44 diluted per share a year ago. Earnings per diluted share, excluding special items, increased 6.4% to $0.50 compared to $0.47 for the second quarter of fiscal 2012. Net income excluding special items was $37.3 million compared to $38.2 million a year ago. Capital expenditures were $32.8 million.
For the six months period, the company reported total revenues of $1,373,271,000 compared to $1,350,306,000 a year ago. Operating income was $108,110,000 compared to $95,507,000 a year ago. Income before provision for income taxes was $95,678,000 compared to $83,896,000 a year ago. Net income was $65,041,000 or $0.86 diluted per share compared to $59,295,000 or $0.72 diluted per share a year ago. Net cash provided by operating activities was $131,277,000 compared to $114,245,000 a year ago. Payments for property and equipment were $69,752,000 compared to $53,475,000 a year ago.

The Company owns, develops, operates and franchises the Chilis Grill & Bar (Chilis) and Maggianos Little Italy (Maggianos) restaurant brands, as well as a virtual brand, Its Just Wings. The Company operates through two segments: Chiliâs and Maggianoâs. The Chiliâs segment includes the Company-owned Chiliâs restaurants, which are principally located in the United States, within the full-service casual dining segment of the industry. The Chiliâs segment also has Company-owned restaurants in Canada, and franchised locations in the United States, other countries and two United States territories. The Maggianoâs segment includes the Company-owned Maggianoâs restaurants in the United States as well as its domestic franchise business. The Company owns, operates or franchises approximately 1,600 restaurants in approximately 29 countries and two United States territories.
