Under EU competition rules, the European Commission has announced that it has made binding the commitments proposed by Apple to address the Commission's concerns about competitors' access to its contactless iPhone payment technology via Near-Field-Communication or NFC.

The Commission had found that Apple held a dominant position on the iOS in-store mobile wallet market, by controlling access to NFC hardware and software, thus limiting access to third-party developers.

Apple has therefore agreed to allow third-party mobile wallet providers to use Host Card Emulation (HCE) technology for contactless payments free of charge, independently of Apple Pay.

The firm has also promised a transparent, non-discriminatory process for access to NFC, as well as features facilitating the use of third-party applications by default for payments.
