2013 Anglo American Platinum strengthening engagement with the Department of Mineral Resources

18 January 2013
Anglo American Platinum Limited ("Anglo American Platinum" or "the Company) yesterday held constructive discussions with the Department of Mineral Resources ("DMR") following the Company's announcement of its business review proposals on Tuesday 15 January 2013. The Minister of Mineral Resources, Ms Susan Shabangu, and the CEO of Anglo American Platinum, Chris Griffith, led the discussions.

Anglo American Platinum and the DMR have agreed to engage positively during the next 90 days to discuss the business review proposals and to determine how they can best work together to achieve their shared objective for the benefit of all stakeholders.

This engagement will proceed in parallel with the consultation process that has already commenced under Section 189 of the Labour Relations Act. There will also be continuing discussions in relation to the economic challenges facing the platinum industry as a whole as part of the MIGDETT (Mining Industry Growth Development and Employment Task Team) process.

Chris Griffith, CEO of Anglo American Platinum, said: "We welcome the opportunity for continuing engagement with Minister Shabangu and her team in order to reach our shared objective of creating a sustainable, competitive and profitable platinum business for the benefit of all stakeholders and for South Africa."

Updates on the progress of the engagement will be provided, as appropriate.
