The European Union asked Amazon.com what steps the e-commerce giant is taking to ensure it complies with the bloc's sweeping digital regulation, as Brussels continues to scrutinize big tech's power.

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said it sent Amazon a formal request for information on what the group is doing to comply with the Digital Services Act after it was designated as a very large online platform.

The law requires large platforms to take steps to deal with content that regulators view as harmful, and give users an avenue to register their complaints about content moderation. In Amazon's case, the EU said the company is expected to identify and evaluate risks relevant to its service and provide an option in its recommendation systems that isn't based on user profiling.

The maximum fine for a large online platform or search engine that breaks the rules is set at 6% of global annual revenue.

Amazon didn't respond to a request for comment. The company has until July 26 to provide the requested information.

The EU could open formal proceedings if it suspects the company isn't complying with the Digital Services Act.
