Abengoa will develop its first water project in Turkey

This contract will contribute to develop the city of Dogubayazit, through the guarantee of a year-round supply of drinking water.

The project involves an investment to over 22.5 million euros.

Seville, January 4, 2012.- Turkey's Ministry of the Environment and Urban Planning has awarded Abengoa, international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, the development of the Dogubayazit water supply system, situated in the east of the country, in close proximity to the Iranian border. The contract amount totals more than 22.5 million euros.

The project's work scope includes the execution of a drinking water treatment plant employing a physico-chemical process. This facility will have the capacity to treat nearly 35,000 cubic meters per day, and it could supply drinking water to 175,000 people. The project also involves the execution of two tanks with a volume totaling 7,000 cubic meters, and 400 kilometers of pipeline.

Dogubayazit is Turkey's easternmost city. Given that it encompasses one of the country's most significant historical enclaves, the city's main sources of income are tourism and the service sector. The contract awarded will contribute to development in the region by guaranteeing a year-round supply of drinking water.

This project, the first one developed by Abengoa in this country water sector, is part of the package of measures being implemented by Turkey with a view to joining the European Union (EU). By taking these steps, the country seeks to meet the highly stringent EU directives pertaining to environmental protection.

With this new contract Abengoa consolidates its presence in Turkey, where it is developing waste recycling activities since 2010, with the beginning of the operation period of a plant located in the south of Turkey dedicated to steel waste recycling.
