Shares of energy companies rose as forecasts for a heat wave in much of the U.S. triggered belief in higher demand for commodities.

Natural gas futures snapped a long losing streak as traders bet higher usage of air conditioning would lead to more gas consuption.

Oil futures rose for the second straight session, and closed at their highest level since April amid concern that the Gulf of Mexico could see major storms, threatening production.
