The government of Benin said Wednesday that it will subsidize 31.5 billion CFA francs ($52.02 million) in input costs for farmers of cotton, rice and corn in the coming 2022-23 season.

The move comes amid surging prices of fertilizer, pesticides, insecticides amid the Ukraine conflict and continuing impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the government said.

Under the subsidy, prices of each will be capped at XAF14,000 per 50-kilogram bag, in comparison with current prices of XAF28,000.

Benin was the top producer of African cotton last season.
