Producers of metals and other raw materials fell, but not by as much as the broad market, amid signs that inflation was cooling off in Europe.

German consumer prices rose 8.6% in December from a year earlier, a significant deceleration from 10% gains in November.

Economists warned that inflation relief could prove temporary. Grain futures are set to endure another volatile year as Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues to send shockwaves.
