Four community facilities receive upgrades thanks to support from the Harper Government

Brad Trost, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Humboldt, on behalf of the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, joined hockey players and their parents at the Watson arena to announce infrastructure funding for projects in east-central Saskatchewan.

With a total federal investment of $119,852, historical, recreational and other public facilities in Watson, Spalding, Prud'homme and Lake Charron Regional Park will be renovated and modernized to improve functionality, structural integrity and accessibility. Funding is provided through the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund.

  • Prud'homme's Multicultural Providence Museum was previously the residence of the Sisters of Providence; the museum officially opened in 1994.

Quotes

"Our Government is committed to creating jobs and economic growth in communities in the West and across Canada. By improving local facilities in rural Saskatchewan, we are boosting economic activity that will maintain a higher quality of life for area residents."

  • - Brad Trost, Member of Parliament, Saskatoon-Humboldt

"We applied for this investment because the upgrades would be a huge benefit to our community. Every time it rains our ball diamond floods, which means it doesn't get used much by minor ball clubs or the Slo Pitch league. Completing the renovations at the arena will ensure its long-term viability and improve energy efficiencies to reduce operating expenses."

  • - Norma Weber, A/Mayor, Town of Watson

"This funding, together with funds raised locally, will allow us to preserve the history and heritage of our community, as well as to maintain a popular destination for many visitors to Prud'homme. We have had visitors from as far away as France, sometimes coming to track down the history of their own families."

  • - Margret Asmuss, Mayor, Village of Prud'homme

"Spalding is a small community with a population of 242 people. The Community Hall is the only hall in the village and rural municipalities. The community has to try and keep what we have to accommodate our ratepayers. The hall serves as a hub to pull community together with the many events and social gatherings held there."

  • - Cathy Holt, Administrator, Village of Spalding/Rural Municipality of Spalding No. 368

"For the most part, regional parks are self-sustaining, volunteer-driven organizations that create employment, economic benefits and community viability. Our dedicated volunteers and park patrons appreciate this federal grant, which will significantly improve road access to, and electrical services at, the park."

  • - Lorraine Kellington, Chairperson, Lake Charron Regional Park Authority
