Harding was abuzz this weekend with the Provincial Treasury taking its Savings Campaign to the town.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Finance, Mrs Belinda Scott, and Head of Department, Mr Simiso Magagula, launched a multi-pronged blitz encouraging residents of the South Coast town to save their hard-earned money.
Scott and Magagula first visited Isixaxa Service Group in the nearby Machi village where they donated computers, photocopying machine to the organisation. Isixaxa is an organisation formed of disabled people who manufacture cleaning detergents, shoes, traditional regalia, and bake cakes to generate income for themselves.
Scott was blown away by the talent showcased by members of the organisation through their work. 'This is what government encourages. People should use their talent and entrepreneurship to generate employment for themselves. Isixaxa is a shining example that it is possible to do that,' said Scott.
Magagula said the Provincial Treasury would continue to support this organisation so that it would grow. 'We are here to give you support. Government is prepared to support such initiatives because they are in line with its vision to fight poverty, unemployment and inequality,' said Magagula.
He advised the organisation to ensure that they treat their business professionally and ensure that they save their income with the intention to grow the business.
Accompanied by uMuziwabantu Mayor, Councillor Dixie Nxiki, Scott took to the town in Harding where they met street vendors organisation members, Zamokuhle Stokvel at the town hall. Zamokuhle members save R10 per day into their stokvel. They cash their savings at the end of the year.
Magagula advised members to value their savings and spend the money wisely. 'Plan for your money. You cannot work so hard throughout the year only to spend this money on trivial things,' he said.
KwaZulu-Natal Financial Literacy Association Chairman, Artwell Hlengwa, who was part of the campaign encouraged the businesswomen to dream big and grow their businesses. He said the association was prepared to assist them to grow their business skills.
Nxiki who was alongside the Provincial Treasury all the time said the campaign would yield positive results to the people of this town. 'It encourages people to save the little money they have for the rainy days.
'The campaign could not have come at a better time. January is a problematic month for most people. If they start planning now, they will have a better end of the year,' said the mayor.
Nkosi Machi said the support to Isixaxa would encourage members to excel in their business. 'They have shown incredible talent in manufacturing polish, shoes, detergents, traditional attire, etc.
'I plead with Zamokuhle members to keep their money safe at the bank so that it can be safe and accumulate interest,' he added.
