'OREGON UTILITIES READY TO LEAVE COAL BEHIND.' That's a headline from last week, explaining how two Oregon electric utilities will join with a group of environmental advocates to essentially stop using coal to generate electricity consumed in Oregon within the next 20 years.

The Oregon LNG Project will help cut the use of coal for electrical generation in Asian countries, where it is widespread and creates severe health problems. Energy experts agree that cleaner-burning natural gas will be essential for decades to come in Asia, even with all the renewable projects being built there.

We all know that air pollution and climate change are global issues. Asian air, Oregon air, it's all earth's air, and it drifts across oceans and mixes. Reducing the use of coal everywhere is the direction world leaders want to go, as shown in the climate agreement recently reached in Paris.

Asia wants North American natural gas, and the shortest shipping distance is from the West Coast. By liquefying and exporting natural gas, the Oregon LNG Project will bring major economic benefits to Warrenton, Clatsop County, and Northwest Oregon.

  • $90 million every year in new tax revenues for schools, police and fire service, roads, parks, and more
  • 3,000 construction jobs for up to five years, plus hundreds of new jobs in the community to support the project
  • 650 long-term jobs either operating the plant or serving the plant and its workers in the community

No other project or business on the horizon would provide anywhere near these benefits to the community. Safely, while protecting the environment.
