Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Sigmar Gabriel today met with Algeria's Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal in Berlin.

Minister Gabriel said: 'Algeria is an important partner in the region for Germany. Together we want to improve the economic environment in Algeria and give a fresh stimulus to our bilateral relations. German companies expect that the visit by Prime Minister Sellal will help to reduce administrative barriers to imports and investments.'

In 2014, bilateral trade between Germany and Algeria totalled around 5.1 billion euros. Germany imported goods from Algeria worth about 2.5 billion euros (especially crude oil) and exported to Algeria goods worth around 2.6 billion euros (in particular motor vehicles, vehicle parts and machinery). Since 2011 economic cooperation between the two countries has been intensified thanks to the annual sessions of the German-Algerian Joint Economic Commission. In this context, government and business representatives meet alternately in Germany and Algeria to share information in all sectors including energy, logistics, infrastructure and services. In addition, Federal Minister Gabriel and Energy Minister Yousfi launched the German-Algerian Energy Partnership in March 2015.
