Announces changes to scope of award program

CLEVELAND, January 31, 2017 - The Lubrizol Corporation, in partnership with the Lake County Educational Service Center (ESC), announces Sarah Rivera as the winner of the annual Lubrizol Corporation Lake County STEM Teacher Award. Rivera, a teacher at Perry High School, was selected for her innovative project-based lessons that engaged students with connections to the real-world.

As recipient of the award, Rivera will receive $5,000 for STEM-related teaching expenses of her choice, up to $2,000 to attend a national STEM teacher professional development conference and sponsorship to attend the Ohio Chemistry Technology Council (OCTC) Teachers, Industry and Environment (TIE) Conference. In addition, Perry High School will receive an award of $5,000 for STEM equipment.

Addressing Perry Local Schools' administration and faculty, Bob Graf, corporate vice president of research and development for Lubrizol, honored Sarah by highlighting her innovative unit entitled 'Empathy in Engineering', which focused on helping students better understand the needs of end users. Graf stated, 'Understanding the end-user perspective is critical to successful product design and it's really impressive to see this element incorporated in a high school curriculum.'

Dr. Betty Jo Malchesky, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment for Perry Local Schools, recognized the impact of the award on Sarah and her students, saying 'Opportunities like this, coupled with community partnerships, can transform the world-class learning experience for students. This type of recognition also ignites the educator's passion to continually seek real-world learning experiences that truly matter - learning pursuits that have potential to positively impact others, the community and even the world.'

Coinciding with Sarah's recognition, Lubrizol also announces significant changes to its teacher award program, which has historically only recognized science teachers throughout the 22-year history of the award. Eligibility for the award was expanded this school year to include teachers in all STEM disciplines. This aligns with the longstanding importance of all STEM disciplines to Lubrizol's ability to develop innovative, practical specialty chemical solutions for customers' toughest challenges that meet needs of end users. This award program also parallels a defined, sustained direction in K-12 education.

Jovette Hiltunen, Educational Consultant for the Lake County ESC, supported the expansion in scope commenting, 'The Lake County Educational Service Center is pleased to partner with Lubrizol for this important recognition of exemplary STEM educators in Lake County. We have many great teachers and teams of teachers who promote STEM inquiry-based learning in their classrooms as was noted by the quality of the nominations. The Lubrizol award gives our local teachers and their schools an opportunity to share their important work with the business community as well as help build our region's capacity in STEM teaching and learning.'
