GetMyRx Inc., a mobile technology company dedicated to improving the convenience of the retail pharmacy experience, today launched an easy-to-use app that enables people to order prescriptions instantly from their phones, confirm their copays upfront, and have medications delivered the same day at no extra cost. The first-of-its-kind service went live in Miami this week, and will expand in coming weeks to New York, San Francisco and other metro markets. The GetMyRx® app, the "Uber" of prescription drugs, can be downloaded for free on the Apple App Store.

A Harvard University Study of nearly 280,000 patients found that one in three adults who receive a new prescription never even take it to the pharmacy. Hassle and procrastination are the most widely cited reasons for this form of non-adherence. According to the New England Healthcare Institute, a nonprofit health-policy organization, patients who do not take their medications as prescribed by their doctors cost the U.S. health care system an estimated $290 billion in avoidable medical spending every year.

Jorge Bertran MD, a family physician on Key Biscayne, Fla., is an early adopter of the GetMyRx service. "It is crucial that patients properly adhere to medical prescriptions. Watching my patients use the GetMyRx app in my office, I can rest assured that they will start treatment immediately. When patients wait a day or two, they are less likely to fill the prescription and their condition may worsen, requiring a new medication, higher dosage or even hospitalization," said Dr. Bertran. "Proper medication usage can save lives and improve outcomes."

GetMyRx is the first app to support new or existing, paper or electronic prescriptions. Users can place a first-time order in about a minute. The app matches the user's location with a nearby pharmacy to fill and deliver it after confirming the user's copayment information in advance. (Watch a 30-second video of how GetMyRx works.)

"While much attention has been given to the problem of medication non-adherence, most efforts have been directed toward helping people stay on treatment. GetMyRx is the first solution to focus on the 30 percent of new prescriptions that never get filled in the first place," said founder and CEO Luis Angel. "With the GetMyRx app, consumers no longer need to waste time driving or standing in line at pharmacies in order to get basic prescription medications."

Previously, Angel developed the payment and delivery platform for DeRemate, an e-commerce site, and spent eight years leading sales and marketing teams at Novartis where he saw first-hand the frustration experienced by physicians with patient non-adherence. Becoming a father in 2010, he became keenly aware of the hassle commonly experienced by American families when filling prescriptions. With his technology and pharmaceutical expertise, Angel left Novartis to found GetMyRx in early 2013. The company plans to expand across major U.S. metro areas in 2014.
