Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill welcomed the rise in agricultural income for 2013 indicated by the latest DARD figures released today.
Thursday, 30 January 2014

Commenting on the figures, the Minister, said: "After the collapse in farm incomes during 2012, it is heartening to see incomes recovering. Last year did not begin well, with the heavy snow fall causing havoc and the late spring leading to severe shortages in livestock fodder. However, a decent summer helped to turn the situation around, particularly in the dairy sector."

The Minister continued: "Currently farm input costs remain high for many farmers and I am aware that more work needs to be done to improve performance across the entire farming sector. This makes it all the more important that we get the best out of the 'Going for Growth' initiative and the new reform of the Common Agricultural Policy. In the coming months, I will be seeking the support of the Executive in building a stronger industry that can face the future with confidence and which offers scope and opportunity for those who wish to develop their businesses and careers in this sector.

"The importance of CAP support in the farm income figures is clear, with Single Farm Payments accounting for 87% of total income. With every reform of CAP, the threat of reductions in direct payments grows and I believe we must work to improve the long term competitiveness of our industry in order to reduce our exposure on this front."

The Minister concluded: "As the industry gets back on track, we need to turn our attention to the longer term challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. It is time to begin to take a more farsighted view on where we as an industry are and where we want to go."
