Cearna Aesthetics, Inc. was named the winner of the Shark Tank challenge at the American Society of Dermatologic Surgeons (ASDS) Annual Meeting. A panel of leading dermatologists selected Cearna Aesthetics for OcuMend, which uses ultra-penetrating nanotechnology to reduce bruising, swelling and pain.

During the competition, modeled after the television show Shark Tank, presenters were given 10 minutes to pitch their product. The moderator and commentators then challenged presenters both on the scientific details of their product or technique as well as on the viability of application in a clinical setting.

Bruising is common in patients after receiving non-invasive cosmetic and surgical procedures. OcuMend’s patented nanotechnology embeds arnica in a gel with 50 times the potency of any other arnica gel on the market. OcuMend also incorporates ledum, which specifically targets bruising in tissue around the eyes and is not included in other aesthetic products.

OcuMend is designed for cosmetic injectable procedures such as Juvederm®, Restylane® and Botox®. “Our filler patients feel that OcuMend pads make a difference in reducing bruising associated with filler injections,” says Dr. Ashish C. Bhatia, “and will ask for them if we forget to offer the pads with their treatments.”

Dr. Sue Ellen Cox agrees: "OcuMend nanotechnology arnica patches have been a tremendous asset to my practice,” she says. “Patients have told me when they use the patches they are less likely to bruise after injectables. This is one way I have differentiated my practice and added value for my patients."

OcuMend is designed for rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty and other surgical procedure recovery. A 2016 clinical study published in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery demonstrated that 89% of patients recovered faster than average when treated with OcuMend, with 52% recovering an average of seven days faster.

With over 6,100 members, ASDS is the largest specialty organization in the United States exclusively representing dermatologic surgeons. For more information on Cearna Aesthetics and OcuMend, please go to www.cearna.com. To learn more about ASDS, visit www.asds.net.
