What could you lose in a home fire? Everything. Fire is fast. In less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into a major fire.

To help families across the country prevent the tragedy of a home fire, the United States Fire Administration (USFA) has begun airing a new series of broadcast public service announcements (PSAs) that remind us why – and how – to stay safe from fire.

“On average, a home fire occurs every 85 seconds,” says USFA. “Fire can happen to anyone, at any time.” To address this threat, USFA’s “Up In Smoke” campaign provides simple but powerful audio and visual cues. Remembering them, and putting them into action, can prevent injuries and save lives.

The PSAs have been released in 15- and 30-second spots for broadcast and radio use. They address some of the most important home fire safety messages, including:

  • Make sure you have working smoke alarms.
  • Practice an escape plan for you and your loved ones.
  • Keep children at least three feet away from anything that gets hot.
  • Always stay in the kitchen when cooking with high temperatures.
  • Keep heaters three feet away from anything that can burn.

The “Up In Smoke” is part of USFA’s broader national initiative, Fire Is Everyone’s Fight™, which aims to reduce home fire injuries, deaths and property loss by changing how people think about fire and fire prevention.
