EnviroGene has been providing molecular diagnostic services to the water, contaminated land and oil and gas industry since 2004. They are experts at applying molecular biology technique known as the quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to field studies. In the water sector, they have developed EnviroTrace, a nanoparticle tracer system used for tracking down sources of pollution in waterways. Here qPCR is used to detect minute quantities of tracers and so the technology is very tolerant of large dilutions. In the contaminated land sector, they use qPCR to determine whether microbes on a site are capable of cleaning up a hydrocarbon contaminant. In the oil and gas sector, they use qPCR to find genes in surface microbes that are diagnostic for oil or gas reservoirs underneath the surface.
