Kumaresan started his professional career in 1981 with Arthur Young, Chartered Accountants (now Ernst and Young).
In 1988 he joined Grattan plc, subsidiary of Next plc as their Financial Accountant.
In 1990 he joined Deloitte & Touche, Management Consultants and worked in their South African office.
In 1992 he returned to the UK and joined LCCIEB as Finance Manager and was shortly thereafter appointed as the Director of Corporate Services.
In December 2002 he was appointed Finance Director of EDI.
