J. Walter Levering

Having been active in the technology sector in Central Virginia for a number of years, Mr. Levering brings considerable experience in growing young companies to the role of Regional Director for Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology in the Shenandoah Valley and the Piedmont.
Mr. Levering was one of the founders of the Virginia Piedmont Technology Council and served as its first CEO, later chairman.
He was one of the founders of the Virginia Technology Alliance and served as recent chairman.
Mr. Levering has broad experience in a variety of industries and markets, including large-scale OCR systems, communications software, computer peripherals, real estate development, aviation, Web-enabled applications, risk/profitability analysis systems, back-office financial processing software.
From his work with Docutel, the first U.S.
manufacturer of ATMs, he has noted that so many of the lessons learned in the early acceptance of debit cards and self-service banking are directly applicable to today's consumer and business adoption of the Internet and Web.
Mr. Levering's international experience includes export/import with Argentina, product development collaborations in Sweden and France and sales in Canada.
In addition to his active participation with the boards of the technology councils, he also serves on the board of the Piedmont Virginia Community College, Workforce Investment Board - Area VI and Virginia's F.I.R.S.T.
Mr. Levering attended the University of Virginia and has completed numerous business, management, sales skills, and technology courses throughout his career.
He was a helicopter pilot and instructor in the U.S.
Army.
During two tours of duty in Vietnam, Mr. Levering received a direct commission from CW2 to 1Lt.
and was awarded the Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross.
