As we start another exciting year of research & development here at Xeros, further harnessing the power of bead cleaning technology, we thought we'd reflect on some of the new green technology ideas which caught our imagination in the past year.

  • 2014 saw significant progress in the advance of the 'smart home' with the development of 'smart' thermostats leading the way. These thermostats have the ability to save money, and make homes greener by adjusting heating in each room to avoid over-heating and maintain a uniform temperature. Simple and ecologically sound, smart thermostats have seen strong sales in the past year.
  • An exciting new development coming out of the oil and gas industry is Maersk's TriGen technology. This technology, built in conjunction with Siemens, takes poor quality natural gas produced from oil reservoirs and burns it, creating CO2 gas for further oil recovery, clean drinking water, and electricity. This technology could create drinking water and electricity in the parts of the world that need it most, such as the Middle East and North Africa.
  • In late 2014 a new public transport innovation hit the roads between Bristol and Bath - a bus powered entirely by human and food waste! The biobus is powered entirely by methane gas, and is capable of traveling nearly 190 miles on one tank of gas.  It produces significantly fewer emissions than a regular diesel bus, and no, it doesn't smell!
  • Another green development which happened in 2014 was the 'greening' of the world's most popular motorsport - Formula One. New rules were introduced last year changing from a V8 engine to a V6 supercharged alternative. These new engines were also hybrids, converting both kinetic and thermal energy into huge speed and acceleration. These changes have brought F1 more in line with modern motoring developments, and led to some very interesting contests throughout last year.
  • Another technology which could be making waves into 2015 is a tech start-up called Sole Power. The company has developed an insert which goes into your shoe and charges a battery, which in turn can charge your phone anytime, anywhere.
  • Our own Xeros bead-cleaning system continued to make waves last year and increase sales to commercial laundries. However in December we also showcased for the first time our domestic bead-cleaning washing machine and matching drier. These machines will help cut water use by up to 70%, energy use by around 50% and cut the amount of chemicals needed to clean by another 50%.

These are just a handful of emerging green technologies that respond to consumer and business demands, saving money and energy, as well as offering time-saving solutions to time-poor consumers. Ultimately, the necessity of energy saving will fuel the invention of new ideas like this, and it's extremely encouraging to see such advances being made.
