General Motors has released its first global sustainability report, highlighting its expanded focus on the environment.

The report is organized into four sections, each outlining a different part of the company's business: design, build, sell, and reinvest. Some of the highlights from the report include a recycling rate of 92 percent across all of GM's global facilities and the relative success of vehicles like the Chevy Volt.

According to the company, continued growth in sustainability is a key to further growth economically.

"GM's success depends in part on offering vehicles and services to solve these challenges while meeting customer needs" CEO Dan Akerson said. "The Chevrolet Volt is a great example. During a time when we were fighting for our life as a company and managing through a global economic downturn, we still managed to launch one of the most environmentally sound and transformational vehicles in history."

To this end, the company has set out a number of sustainability goals for the future, which include: reduce its energy and carbon intensity at facilities by 20 percent, reduce water intensity by 15 percent, and reduce overall waste by 10 percent.
