Canadian telecommunications provider TELUS Corp. said Friday it has appointed John Manley as the new chair of its board, succeeding Dick Auchinleck.

Telus said that Mr. Auchinleck is set to retire after 20 years on the board, including eight as its chair.

Mr. Manley's appointment was the result of a succession planning process which included a third-party evaluation of the performance of its board members. The appointment is expected to become effective in early May after his re-election to the board at the company's annual general meeting.

Mr. Manley had a 16-year career in politics where he served as deputy prime minister and minister in the portfolios of industry, foreign affairs and finance, TELUS said.

He is also one of the longest-serving independent directors of TELUS's board and has been on all of the company's board committees since 2012.
