MCLEAN, Va., Sept. 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Sunrise Senior Living (NYSE: SRZ) announced today it will host Sunrise Spirit Week, a variety of daily events from September 9 to September 15 in nearly 300 of its communities. Sunrise Spirit Week will showcase activities that allow residents to experience community programming that nurtures the whole person - mind, body and spirit. Highlighting the power of laughter, music and other activities to enrich residents' daily lives, Sunrise Spirit Week will provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about Sunrise's unique approach to senior living.

"At every Sunrise community, our programming is carefully planned to ensure each resident has an opportunity to participate in a variety of meaningful activities that enrich their minds, bodies and spirits," said Laura McDuffie, executive vice president and head of operations at Sunrise. "Enabling choice is one of Sunrise's principles of service and every day we offer a robust activities calendar so all of our residents can stay curious and engaged."

Sunrise's Programming and Activities celebrate the capabilities and potential of all residents and encourage individuals to stay active and have fun. The increasingly popular and innovative exercise known as Laughter Yoga, which works simultaneously on both the body and mind to enable a person to laugh continuously for several minutes with short breaks of "yogic" breathing, is just one example of the many activities the public is invited to participate in during Sunrise Spirit Week.

Communities will also showcase a broad range of musical programming, from providing local musicians with rehearsal space to hosting events that highlight a decade-specific theme featuring celebrity impersonators such as Elvis Presley and Barry Manilow. Other activities communities will host include trivia contests, resident socials, guest speakers, senior Zumba classes and much more.

"Sunrise takes pride in its approach to enriching residents' lives by offering a variety of innovative and entertaining activities," said Nancy King, senior vice president of Resident Care at Sunrise. "Sunrise Spirit Week will highlight activities our residents benefit from and enjoy, such as musical and art enrichment, community service projects and intergenerational activities."
