Vienna - The listedgroup STRABAG has been commissioned to convert the French Hall in the Kunstlerhaus Wien into a modern opera house with up to 279 seats. The future, new venue of the Vienna State Opera is dedicated to young audiences as well as young talents. Space is created for a sufficient offer for young audiences, and adequate work with young artists is made possible. In this way, the Vienna State Opera can fulfil its cultural-political and entrepreneurial mission.

'We attach great importance to selecting our initiatives very carefully in order to make a sustainable and targeted contribution. In these long-term commitments, we focus on the next generation or children and young people. In the Vienna State Opera, we have found a partner for whom sustainability is just as central. We are proud that our support will secure the work of young talent at this internationally renowned and for the cultural nation of Austria, which is so important for the cultural nation of Austria, for the coming decades,' explains Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE. Realization of the conversion as a PPP project with total project costs of EUR 20.5 million

The project is a public-private partnership. Project partners of the Vienna State Opera are Kunstlerhausbesitz und -betriebs GmbH (KBBG), STRABAG SE, the Haselsteiner Familien-Privatstiftung and the public sector, represented by the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Public Service and Sport (BMKOES). According to current planning, the total project costs for the construction of the French Hall as the workplace and venue of the Vienna State Opera amount to EUR 20.5 million. Of this, the BMKOES contributes EUR 5 million through a one-time donation, EUR 10 million will be contributed through sponsoring by STRABAG, the remaining EUR 5.5 million will be financed by the Haselsteiner Familien-Privatstiftung. Planned completion and handover in September 2024

The first construction phase, which has already begun, will end in September 2021, as three exhibitions will take place in the neighbouring Albertina Modern from October 2021 to January 2023.

The expected vibrations during the ongoing construction operation would make it impossible to carry out these exhibitions, so the construction work will not resume until February 2023. The French Hall is scheduled to be completed and handed over to the Vienna State Opera in September 2024.
