Sporting lost 10-9 on penalty kicks on Saturday evening in the third place play-off of the 57th Roman Carranza Tournament with Italian Serie A side Udinese after a 2-2 result in normal time. The two goals for The Green and Whites both coming from Diego Rubio, while Abdi and Flores got the goals for Udinese.

There were eight changes to the team from the match the night before with only Schaars, Postiga and Yannick keeping their places in the team. The Lions played a 4x1x4x1 formation playing Marcelo Boeck in goal, Pereira as right-back and on the left side of defence, young French Atila Turan made his debut, Polga and Carriço paired in the centre of defence. In midfield, Rinaudo played the holding role, in front of him were André Martins, Schaars, Yannick and Jeffren (also making his debut as a starter) leaving Helder Postiga upfront on his own.

The Lions went into half time 1-0 down due to a 14th minute goal against the run of play from Mauricio Isla Abdi, after a quick counter attack down the right side. Despite being behind at the break Sporting played fluid attacking football throughout the half and managed to create more chances than the Italians looking the more dangerous of the two sides. Sporting had good opportunities to equalize, first by Polga from a corner taken by Schaars and then by Carriço who forced Handanovic into a good save with the Slovenian goalkeeper also denying Yannick an almost certain goal.

During half time Sporting changed five players bringing on Rodriguez, Evaldo, Andre Santos, Capel and Rubio in place of Yannick, Carriço, Turan, Schaars and Postiga. The Green and Whites got off to a great start in the second period of play when just 3 minutes in Rubio scored his second goal in as many games in the Roman Carranza Tournament. The goal came when the Chilean slid in front of a powerful shot across goal causing the ball to end up in the goal. Despite being on top of the opposition Sporting conceded a second goal in the 80th minute when Udinese launched a long free kick into the area and Floro Flores volleyed the ball into the net at the far post. In a dramatic end to the game Sporting pulled level once again when Danilo Rinaudo won a penalty on the 91st minute, the penalty was then converted by Diego Rubio who got his third goal of the tournament. This took the tie to a penalty shoot out which Udinese managed to win.
