London, 27 January 2015: City Workers, found to be the fittest in London byAvanta , London's leading serviced office provider, may be struggling to stick to their New Years' Resolutions. Whilst nearly 1 in 7 City workers intended to get fitter in 2015, the majority (59%) will have given up their new fitness regime by the end of this week, according to an extensive study of the capital's workers.

But it's not all bad news. Despite broken resolutions, workers based in the City are still doing better than their slovenly neighbours. 50% of workers in the City go to the gym at least once a week in their lunch break, and 71% exercise at least once every week. Once a week won't cut it for many, as nearly a third (29%) get their sweat on three times a week and 15% an incredible five times; with the most active workers coming from the manufacturing and engineering industry. Allied with the fact that City workers spend the longest in the office (45.3 hours per week), it certainly seems that their "work hard, play hard" reputation is based on solid ground.

City workers in the health and entertainment industry, who really should know better, are the least likely to exert themselves, exercising on average just over once a week. This is still better than almost 23% of City workers who say they never exercise.

Alan Pepper, CEO of Avanta Serviced Office Group, commented "There are many stereotypes surrounding the City, so it is interesting to see that despite being known for long work hours and party lifestyles, City workers find more time to exercise than any other London borough. This sort of finding is the kind of insight we gain by conducting the London Worker Index, which will help us to understand the working lives of people across London and deliver the exact services and facilities that they need".

Other key findings for City workers include:

  • Spend the most time in meetings: 2.3 hours per day
  • Big spenders on food: pay 45% more for lunch than the average Londoner (£7.47)
  • Four times more likely than the average to run to work
  • Retail addicts: 63% more likely to go shopping on their lunch break than the average Londoner (1.5 times per week)
  • Most likely to work from home in the evening - 42% do at least once during week
