For the first time, Pohjola Insurance's National Workplace Safety Award was granted to a tourism enterprise. The winner is Levi Ski Resort. The purpose of the Pohjola Safety Award is to encourage companies to improve their safety culture, manage risks and operate safely on a daily basis.

"The choice is based on Levi Ski Resort's long-standing efforts on behalf of safety. Creating a successful safety culture requires the daily commitment of both management and staff," comments Kari Karjalainen, Risk Manager at Pohjola, from Rovaniemi. "At Levi, the long-term development of comprehensive slope safety begins right from the earliest stages of slope design and construction."

To ensure safe downhill skiing for all its customers, Levi employs trained Ski Patrols, continuously improves its slope signage system and maintains professional first aid stations. The highly specialist equipment of the two first aid units is customised to meet the extreme winter conditions of western Lapland.

"Customer safety is Levi Ski Resort's top priority, and the emergency training received by our staff covers accidents as well as sudden illness. We do what we can to keep our customers safe under all circumstances, and we are very happy about Pohjola's recognition for our work," says Jouni Palosaari, CEO of Levi Ski Resort. "We will use the prize money to acquire a second defibrillator for our slope first aid unit."

Levi is Finland's leading ski resort in terms of lift ticket sales. It is also known for its World Cup races. Slope maintenance and other tourist services are provided by Levi Ski Resort. During the skiing season, the resort is staffed by more than 200 employees, over 60 of whom work on site all year.

The risk management cooperation between Pohjola Insurance and Levi Ski Resort has been ongoing for decades. Over the years, potential risks have been identified using a variety of safety checks and risk assessment methods. Levi Ski Resort is also using Pohjola's Risk Management Method.

Pohjola's risk management method helps customers to assess, identify and prioritise their risks on a comprehensive basis and to plan risk management measures accordingly. The method is managed in its entirety by the customers themselves. Pohjola's experts assist the customer during implementation and later provide online and telephone support.

Pohjola's first safety prizes were awarded in 2012. In addition to the national accolade, Pohjola has awarded 18 regional safety prizes in 2014. Through this acknowledgement, OP Financial Group wishes to support companies in their continuing development of safety and risk management. The prize is a grant, awarded against costs incurred after a new safety programme has been prepared or implemented by the company.
